Why do people go to grad school?

My claim is that people go to grad school to prolong the inevitiablity of working and of course to get a better paying job. I don't think a majority of people want to go to grad school for knowledge. I mean knowledge is the pure function of the colleges and universities. They exist to spread and enhance human knowledge to our young people. So this goes back to my enigmatic question why do people want to go to grad school? Time and time again I hear friends say "I want to go to grad school, because the economy is bad right now." Attending schools to get your MBA, PhD, or MA does not necesarily equate to a better job or even a job. It is not a sure thing. College kids these days have to consider grad school as an alternative, because the economy is so bad. A majority really don't want to go for knowledge. Its more of an afterthought. We now have students who are betting that the economy will be better in 2 years when they graduate so that they can get a better job. I don't know maybe I am just an academic purist, but I don't necesarily think this is the reason you learn anything. I guess there is always a value proposition argument in anything in life. Are you a person who believes with the intrinsic value of knowledge for attaining a graduate education? Or are you a person who believes in material values for attaining a graduate education?

Enjoy,
Jonathan
