Three Letter Acronyms (TLA)

Today's TLA of the day is the NBA.

National Basketball Association.

Yesterday was the NBA draft. I am a huge basketball fan, but this year's draft just didn't feel all that exciting. Other than Lebron James and Carmelo Anthony all the other players are just minor league ballers. They are the only 2 who are ready for the NBA. Anyways I think David Stern is the Dr. Evil of all sports franchises. He is the ultimate exploiter of modern day athletes. He is probably worse than Don King. At least Don King has an act. David Stern does it in sly and sinister way.

Today's TLA of the day is BFD.

Big F---ing Deal

Our company just hired an intern from Harvard. Maybe I am just drinking my hater-ade on Harvard cats, but I personally think the best thing Harvard has produced is Conan O'Brien. Check out his commencement speech for the class of 2000. LinkThis is the funniest speech in the world. Harvard cats are good writers. I don't know any Harvard cats who do good CS, good Math, good engineering. Personally we should have hired kids from the Bay Area. I mean there is plenty of talent here, Berkeley, Stanford, SCU, SJSU. And there are lots of smart people out of work right now. Hence the TLA of the day BFD.

The TLA of the day is POO!

Principle of Optimality.

"If you don't do the best with what you have happened to have got, you will never do the best with what you should have had."

This quotation comes from this website on Dynamic Programing in the mathematical context instead of the computer science context. This quotation tripped me out. It almost implies that you should always try to do the best with what you currently have. Its an interesting philosophy. It is the glass is always half full mentality. It implies even if you are down and out you should always try your best with whatever skills or opportunities you are given with any task in life. Not trying your best implies never maximizing your potential. So in general, one should try your best, because who knows what potential you might recieve from trying your best.

The TLA of the day for is GRE
Graduate Record Examinations.

Why do people go to grad school?

My claim is that people go to grad school to prolong the inevitiablity of working and of course to get a better paying job. I don't think a majority of people want to go to grad school for knowledge. I mean knowledge is the pure function of the colleges and universities. They exist to spread and enhance human knowledge to our young people. So this goes back to my enigmatic question why do people want to go to grad school? Time and time again I hear friends say "I want to go to grad school, because the economy is bad right now." Attending schools to get your MBA, PhD, or MA does not necesarily equate to a better job or even a job. It is not a sure thing. College kids these days have to consider grad school as an alternative, because the economy is so bad. A majority really don't want to go for knowledge. Its more of an afterthought. We now have students who are betting that the economy will be better in 2 years when they graduate so that they can get a better job. I don't know maybe I am just an academic purist, but I don't necesarily think this is the reason you learn anything. I guess there is always a value proposition argument in anything in life. Are you a person who believes with the intrinsic value of knowledge for attaining a graduate education? Or are you a person who believes in material values for attaining a graduate education?

Someone sent me this link again.

Mind Reader

So I might as well write down the solution.

Here is the solution for this link.

Hint is "MOD 10"

Given x,y as the two numbers chosen

x+y is the addition of the 2 numbers
the combination of the 2 numbers 'x''y' is actually
10*x + y

so if you do a little algebra

(10x +y) -(x+y)
10x - x
9x

Every number will be some multiple of 9.

The flash recycles the symbols on the multiples of 9.

9,18,27,36,45,54,63,72,81 will ALWAYS BE THE SAME.

Anyways, my TLA of the day will be GOFAI

Good
Old
Fashion
Artificial
Intelligence
