Goal: Read Bible

I just read the first 10 chapters of Genesis and there's a lot of heavy stuff there. First with the fall of Adam, then the story of Cain and Abel, and then goes to the flood story with Noah. Here are some of my notes and thoughts on the first 10 chapters.

The early stories of Genesis deal with nakedness for some sort of reason. The fall of Adam is kinda funny if you think about it. Basically Adam and Eve find out that they are naked, after the serpent tempts them to eat the fruit from the tree of knowledge of good and evil. Adam cowardly looks for leaves to cover himself, I mean come on Adam. Dude your the first man on earth. Why should he have had so much shame and self-consciousness? Did Eve have another man to compare to Adam's manliness? Eve didn't have her girlfriends around to talk about him. Was Adam White? Was Adam Black? Was Adam Asian? Did he just get out of the pool? Also, Adam automatically points to the woman (Eve) for his downfall. It's such a typical male response. Basically he said "I didn't do it, she made me do it God..." Adam, what were you thinking man? Men got punk'd because of his lack of leadership, lack of discipline, blaming, and lack of courage. But God's grace was still with Adam. He could have just blasted him to dust right there and there, but he was looking for Adam. God asking Adam "Where are you?" is hella deep. God knows perfectly well where Adam is. God created everything. How can Adam hide from God? How can anyone hide from God after we sin?

Noah's story after the flood also talks about nakedness. Plain and simply one night Noah partied hard. He partied and drank so hard that he passed out naked in his tent. Ham, one of Noah's sons saw Noah naked and told his 2 other brothers. Shem and Japheth covered Noah and made sure they didn't see Noah's nakedness. Noah curses Ham (the Canaanites) and tells Ham that he will be slaves to his brothers Shem and Japheth for seeing his nakedness. But wait Noah, dude if you can't take the heat then don't drink so damn much. If you party so hard that you pass out naked anywhere and someone sees you, dude then it's on. The gloves come off buddy. It's like falling asleep first at camp. You know you're gonna get messed with. But Ham was kinda weird if you think about it. Dude that's your dad... Why would you look? There are things that you just don't do and that's one of them. It's like when you're in the men's room and when someone says hi or what's up next to your urinal, just look straight ahead and acknowledge their existence there's no point looking down...

Cain and Abel is very interesting. My friends would talk and argue about hunter gatherers vs. agricultural societies were the metaphors in this story. Also the line, "Am I my brother's keeper?" That's just one of the most hardcore sayings in the Bible. It just sounds like it should be a line in a Hollywood film.

Anyways, my goal is to read the Holy Bible from end to end in 2 years. These are my notes and thoughts from Genesis 1 to Genesis 10.

I Am Poor

While talking with my girlfriend Erica. She recently told me that there are roughly 11 million millionaires on a planet that has roughly 7 billion people living on planet earth.

11,000,000 / 7,000,000,000

=

.00157

This statistic just really got to me. Let's think about it.
How many of the 11 million millionaires believe in God?
How many of the 11 million millionaires tithe 10% each year?
How many of the 11 million millionaires are pastors?
How many of the 11 million millionaires are Christian?
How many of the 11 million millionaires are Jewish?
How many of the 11 million millionaires are Muslim?
How many of the 11 million millionaires are CEO's?
How many of the 11 million millionaires live in the Silicon Valley?
How many of the 11 million millionaires live in California?
How many of the 11 million millionaires are white?
How many of the 11 million millionaires are black?
How many of the 11 million millionaires are Asian?
How many of the 11 million millionaires are native-american?
How many of the 11 million millionaires are Chicano/Latino?
How many of the 11 million millionaires are politicians?
How many of the 11 million millionaires have a philanthropic fund?
How many of the 11 million millionaires ever give back to the rest of the 6,989,000,000?
How many of the 11 million millionaires are US Citizens?
How many of the 11 million millionaires are work?
How many of the 11 million millionaires own land?
How many of the 11 million millionaires are have a portfolio manager?
How many of the 11 million millionaires have bad credit?
How many of the 11 million millionaires bought GOOG at $85?
How many of the 11 million millionaires own a house?
How many of the 11 million millionaires need an interest only loan?
How many of the 11 million millionaires are miserable?
How many of the 11 million millionaires are happy?
How many of the 11 million millionaires are married?
How many of the 11 million millionaires are divorced?
How many of the 11 million millionaires are aimless?
How many of the 11 million millionaires are bored?
How many of the 11 million millionaires work in Hollywood?
How many of the 11 million millionaires play golf?
How many of the 11 million millionaires own a computer?
How many of the 11 million millionaires have a college degree?
How many of the 11 million millionaires have a high school degree?
How many of the 11 million millionaires have a graduate degree?
How many of the 11 million millionaires blog?

Anyways... as being one of the 6,989,000,000 who is not a millionaire, I am amazed with the fact that such a small percentage of people around the world control such a majority of wealth across the world. Isn't this just wrong? The haves own everything and the have nots own nothing. How are we so different from 2000 years ago when God's only son came to this world? Wasn't His mission to change this statistic? Shouldn't Christianity and we Christians change this statistic? The fair distribution of wealth, equal opportunity and access to capital for a loan with a fair interest, and equal distribution of food and shelter should be common basic services which all people can and should fight for. And also encourage those who are part of the 11 million millionaires to give cheerfully to the rest of us bottom feeders. All this analysis just really got to me, is the American dream to be one of the 11 million millionaires? If so, then dear heavenly gracious God please wake us up from this tragic American nightmare!

Enjoy,
Jonathan

Turning Twenty-Eight

My sister once told me that I look like a giant 8 year old. And I think now that I have turned 28 I am taking that as a compliment. I just hope I don't act like an 8 year old anymore. Although thinking back being 8 wasn't that bad. Let's see 20 years ago, I just arrived here in America. I remember playing tee ball in Eagle Rock. I remembered that I realized my birthday fell in the summer time and was never during the school year. I can't believe 1986 was 20 years ago. I remember my parent's decision to bite the bullet and enroll us to private Catholic schools vs. public Los Angeles Unified District schools. Thanks Mama and Papa for biting the bullet.

I remember that summer vividly, it was the summer before going to school. Our situation here in America was still up in the air. Were we going to go back to the PI or stay in LA? Wow, just writing about this is really sureal. I mean what if I grew up in the Philippines? Who would my friends be? How would God have molded my life if I grew up in Manila? Anyways, as I turned 28, I know that God has continuously blessed me in my life. The truth is that God didn't make me grow up in Manila, and for that I am very thankful to Him. God has given me great opportunites and great relationships growing up here in America. I have so many wonderful friends in Los Angeles and here in the Bay Area. I can't thank Him enough. Life is really interesting that way, and from my parent's perspective probably very stressful back then? Jeez louieez... I am just thinking in the future for my sister's and brother-in-law's baby. What are the choices and decisions they have to make in their children's life. Now that is real grown up stuff. And from that perspective I am still an 8 year old, because well I don't have the responsibility of having a child.

I am praying that it will be a healthier 28th year, my 27th year sucked with regard to my health. I will try to stay healthy and have a more balanced life. I am coming to the realization that I love being 28. It's 22 years away from being 50.

Enjoy,
Jonathan
